GEORGE TOWN: DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng has said the federal ruling party, Umno would in future be no different from the Nazi stormtroopers who advocated racial purity and supremacy.
He based his prejudgment on the rate Umno leaders were now abandoning the ideal of a Malaysian nation and spewing racial hatred. He turned his guns particularly at Umno incumbent vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and former Malacca Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam for their recent racist taunts and hatred against non-Malays.
Lim cautioned that failure by Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak to repudiate and punish both Umno leaders for their racial taunts would only split the country into two nations of double standard. One, Lim said would favour Umno, and the other non-Umno who neither deserved equal protection before the law nor constitutional rights as citizens of the country.
He said that failure to act against these Umno leaders’ constant racist rants had proven that Najib’s 1Malaysia ideal was dead and Umno would never apologise for being corrupt and spreading lies to demonise its opponents. “DAP calls on all citizens of Malaysia to stand up to Umno and reject such division, discrimination and destruction of our human dignity by showing Umno that we are all Malaysians whether fathers, mothers, brother or sisters,” said the Bagan MP in a statement today.
Malays are victims Lim said Home Minister Zahid had made unwarranted racist taunts and hatred against non-Malays when he is already a leading vice-presidential candidate in the upcoming Umno polls. He ticked off Zahid for calling the unlawful Tiga Line underworld group as his friends and urging them to do what they needed to do, instead of acting against them.
He also took the minister to task for claiming that Malays were victims of crime when official statistics revealed that of the 14,511 secret society members in the country, 6,171 were Malays, 1,701 Chinese, 3,685 Indians and 2,954 from the other races.
The minister has also claimed that the largest drug dealers were Chinese, the smaller ones were Indians and the users were Malays. In internet gambling, Ahmad Zahid has claimed that the bosses were Chinese, operators Indians and patrons Malays.
“All Malaysians regardless of race and religion are victims of crime. “By declaring that only Malays are victims, are the non-Malay victims of crime invisible or should they just disappear without the required protection from crimes against them?” questioned Lim. Lim chided Zahid for his threat to journalists that he would close down their newspapers if they reported his statements.
Corrupt leader
He also slammed the minister for denying due process of law by calling for the shooting of criminals first (‘shoot-first policy’) if the police have evidence.
“I still find it hard to believe that a Home Minister entrusted to uphold law and order can so flippantly make such seditious remarks promoting lawlessness and public disorder. “Is this the future deputy prime minister and prime ministerial candidate who made such shocking, recklessly irresponsible and unacceptable provocations?” asked Lim.
He said the DAP was however not surprised at the racial hatred from an openly corrupt Umno leader like Mohd Ali Rustam, pointing out that this former Malacca Chief Minister was previously banned from Umno polls due to money politics.
Ali Rustam has recently reiterated his blame on ethnic Chinese voters for his surprise defeat in the Bukit Katil parliamentary seat by a large margin in the 13th general election. Lim said that Ali Rustam conveniently blamed the Chinese for his loss to PKR Youth head Shamsul Iskandar in order to hide the real reason – his corruption and abuse of power.
“Even if all the Chinese voters had voted against Ali Rustam, he would still have won if he had not lost a significant number of Malay votes,” said Lim, adding that Malays formed 53% of constituency voters. -
