Sg Limau polls set for Nov 4

PUTRAJAYA: The Sungai Limau state seat by-election, the country’s second after the 13th general election in May this year, would see polling on Nov 4 with nomination set for Oct 23.

In announcing this here today, Election Commission chairman Abdul Aziz Yusof said the dates were fixed after a two hour meeting by the Commission members at its headquarters here today.

The EC chairman also stated that the nomination centre is at Datuk Mahdi hall in Yan, while the final vote counting would be held in SK Agama Yan hall.

The rural seat fell vacant following the death of former Kedah Menteri Besar Azizan Abdul Razak on Sept 26 after prolonged illness.

Azizan, who was also the state PAS commissioner, was the Sungai Limau state assemblyman since 1995.

In the last general election on May 5, this year, Azizan garnered 13,294 votes, beating his cousin, Barisan Nasioonal candidate Mohd Fazillah Mohd Ali, by a majority of 2,774 votes. There were also two independent candidates in the race the last time around.

Sungai Limau state constituency falls under the Jerai parliamentary seat, which is held by Umno-BN.

In the last GE, Sungai Limau had 27,287 registered voters, of which 93% of them were Malays. There are also 6.7% Chinese voters, 0.06% Indians, 0.01 Sabah Bumis, and 0.03% Sarawak Bumi voters in this constituency. There are no postal voters from the military and police.

Kedah Umno liaison chief and Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir late last week announced that the state Barisan Nasional had sent three names of potential candidates to the party top leadership.

PAS on the other hand is said to be on the lookout for a suitable successor to fill the seat.

Sungai Limau town is about 36km from state capital Alor Star, and some 410km from Kuala Lumpur.

The first by-election was held for the Kuala Besut state seat in Terengganu in July. The seat was won by the Barisan Nasional.
