Hijab issue: Umno wants ‘stern action’

KUALA LUMPUR: Wanita Umno and Umno Youth representatives have called for stern action against an individual who had reportedly prohibited a Muslim convert teacher from wearing the ‘tudung’ (headscarf) at a Chinese school in Kota Tinggi, Johor.
Wanita Umno information chief Rosni Zahari said the individual did not have the right to prohibit the teacher from wearing the headscarf to school.

“The individual does not have the right to prohibit the teacher from wearing the tudung or hijab because it is a Muslim woman’s freedom to opt to wear the tudung,” she said in a statement.
Rosni drew attention to the right, saying this included in the workplace so long as it did not violate the code of ethics and manners associated with Islam.
“This right is also provided for under the Federal Constitution,” she said.
Umno Youth Education Bureau chairman Mohd Rafiq Naizamohideen wanted the Education Ministry to take stern action against the individual.
“It is learnt that the Kota Tinggi Education Office has transferred the teacher to another school and brought her to make a police report,” he said.
