‘Think before tabling a motion’

SHAH ALAM: Selangor representatives were reminded by Selangor State Legislative Assembly Speaker Hannah Yeoh to think before tabling a motion as it takes time for her to consider whether the motion should be accepted for debate.

Yeoh reminded state representatives that they were selected by their residents to voice out and represent them regarding issues that required attention at the Selangor state level.

“If you table a motion and then withdraw it, you (representative) have failed your residents as you are unable to put forward the needs of those who voted for you,” she said.
She made the statement in reference to the hudud motion which was originally tabled by BN’s Sungai Air Tawar assemblyman Kamarol Zaki Abdul Malik and then withdrawn, last Friday.
Yeoh said that when a motion is tabled, proper research and understanding of the topic must be done to allow for debate with fellow assembly representatives.
“It is not just about tabling and withdrawing a motion, even though the Standing Order allows for it. You must seriously think about what you want to table as it is time consuming for us to consider whether or not the motion should be allowed for debate,” she said.
“Kamarol has not given an explanation as to why the hudud motion was withdrawn but then the Standing Order does not require for a reason to be given.”
Yeoh stressed that the Selangor State Legislative Assembly were ready to discuss tough and difficult issues and that they would not hide anything from the people.
