Ongkili retained in landmark battle

KOTA KINABALU: Embattled Dr Maximus Ongkili and Dr Yee Moh Chai retained their deputy president posts for the non-Muslim Bumiputera and Chinese quotas respectively in Parti Bersatu Sabah’s (PBS) Supreme Council elections here last night.

However, the incumbent for the deputy president post for the Muslim quota Almudin Kaida lost to former PBS Wanita chief Senator Jamilah Sulaiman.

The announcement was made by PBS’ Elections Committee chairman Johnny Mositun.

Ongkili, who is also Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister, and Yee, who is former Sabah Deputy Chief Minister, were involved in straight fights against former party secretary-general Henrynus Amin and Sabah Assistant Minister of Special Tasks Edward Yong Oui Fah respectively.

Apart from Almudin, Jamilah also beat former vice president Utuh @ Rakam Sijim in a three-way fight.

It was the first time in 18 years that the non-Muslim Bumiputera quota for the deputy president post was contested.

Meanwhile, the five slots for the vice president posts were won by incumbents Radin Malleh and Michael Asang, and new faces Mohd Balbir Arjan, Ruslan Muharam and Ng Loi Tect.

The seven new Supreme Council members for the non-Muslim Bumiputera quota were William Majinbon, Sarapin Magana, John Chryso Masabal, Peter Jino Allion, Danis Buik, Louis Rampas and Samson Gapid.

For the Muslim Bumiputera quota, the ones who made it were Mohd Lin @ Lin Harun, Daud @ Ali Zaman, Francis Lawrence @ Yusof, Mohd Ariffin Chai and Hamdan Suarah.

The four newly-elected Supreme Council members for the Chinese quota are Peter Mak Chun Yun, Chin Teck Ming, Fung Len Fui and Shirley Chien Moi Yen.

Earlier, the party had retained Joseph Pairin Kitingan as president in which he won uncontested.

In his closing speech of the 28th PBS Annual Delegates Congress, which began on Monday, Pairin said he hoped all party members would play and effective role in serving the people.
