Apologise for Moral Studies boo-boo’

PETALING JAYA: A DAP MP today urged the Education Ministry to apologise to SPM students for tweaking the Moral Studies examination paper without proper notice.
Kampar MP Ko Chung Sen the Malaysian Examination Board should have given sufficient notice on the changes to teachers and students alike, instead of surprising them during the exam on Wednesday.
“The duty of the board is to conduct examinations as understood by all the parties concerned, not to surprise them.
“I call upon the Education Ministry to apologise to all parties affected and make amends to the teachers, the parents and the students,” said Ko.
On Wednesday, many SPM students vented out on Facebook saying there was sudden change in the format of the Moral Studies paper.
They said that neither students nor teachers were made aware of the changes.
However, an official from the Malaysian Examination Board dismissed the matter saying they merely rephrased some questions under the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) system, which was announced under the National Education Blueprint, launched only two months back.
Taking the Education Ministry to task, Ko said that it was unwise to introduce HOTS in the Moral Studies paper as it did not involve subjects that required a student to be analytical.
“We need the students to have thinking and analytical skills for science, mathematics and languages, as in TIMSS (Trends in Mathematics and Science Studies) and PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment).
“The Moral Studies was never a subject used in any of these. Secondly, this paper is only sat by less than 40% of the student sitting for the SPM,” he said. Only non-Muslim students sit for this paper.
He also questioned the board on the rationale of introducing HOTS in a haste, when the education blueprint was only launched on September.
“How did the examination board see fit to suddenly introduce 10% of the questions in the new format within two months’ time with the teachers and the students totally unaware and unprepared?
“What’s worse is the Education Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is keeping mum when all this thing is happening,” said Ko.
