SHAH ALAM: The new line-up of PAS vice-presidents is made up of an ulama, an activist and a professional, said newly elected vice-president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.
Tuan Ibrahim, who is PAS Information chief, won one of the three party vice-president’s posts while incumbents Salahuddin Ayub and Husam Musa retained theirs at the 59th PAS Muktamar over the weekend.
“Maybe Salahuddin is seen as party activist, Husam as professional, and I in the context of ulama (Islamic scholar),” said Tuan Ibrahim, who is also Pahang PAS commissioner.
Incumbent PAS vice-president Mahfuz Omar and PAS Education Bureau chief Abu Bakar Chik lost in the five-cornered fight.
Meanwhile, Mahfuz apologised to delegates for any shortcomings during his tenure as vice-president and said the party’s struggle is uppermost in his mind, not holding the office.
Brushing aside that a recount could have led to his defeat, he said: “The loss doesn’t matter to me as I had ran for the office three times. I accept the verdict.”
Husam said he was saddened by Mahfuz’s defeat as the latter, whom he considered a friend, was more eligible to hold the post as he was more articulate and had more ideas during meetings.
“However, the decision has been made, I accept it with an open heart. Our task now is to unite and forget the squabbles during the election.
“Let us look to the future,” he said, adding that he had expected either Mahfuz or him to be eliminated from the race.
Salahuddin said even though he garnered the highest number of votes at 917, he felt sad as former central committee member Abu Bakar Chik, whom he considered an elder brother, lost in the tussle.
Commenting on his defeat, Abu Bakar said he joined the fray as he felt that his 30-year experience in PAS central leadership, including as PAS Youth chief for 10 years from 1988, would put him in good stead to help the party restore the Malays support.
“Whatever it is, PAS delegates had made up their minds,” he added.
