Lim censures Ooi says comments ‘unfair’

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng broke his silence over the ‘kuching kurap’  issue when he said he concurred with State Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow that Jelutong MP Jeff Ooi should not have uttered degrading remarks against low-ranked staff.
“I’m of the same opinion as Yang Berhormat Chow. As he represents the state, Jeff Ooi should listen to what Chow had said,” Lim told reporters at the State Assembly lobby here yesterday.

Chow was reported saying that Ooi’s ‘kucing kurap’ (people of no significance) remarks on two ill-informed Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) officers were unfair and uncalled for as he was ill-advised on the reason why a senior officer did not accompany him during a visit to an illegal hawker site.
Ooi continued to receive brickbats from both Barisan Nasional (BN) and opposition elected representatives.
Penang Religious Affairs, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Abdul Malik Abul Kassim (PKR-Batu Maung) said such remarks should not have been uttered by an elected representative as he has many avenues to voice out his dissatisfaction with MPPP officers.
State Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh (DAP-Sungai Puyu) said Ooi should use proper channels if he had any problem any quarters.
Roslan Saidin (BN-Pinang Tunggal) urged the people to revaluate whether such leader was fit to represent them as he was only good at pointing finger at others.
Meanwhile, 100 Persatuan Anak Muda Pulau Pinang members staged a peaceful demonstration at the Lebuh Acheh Mosque here after the Friday prayers, displaying banners and placards urging Ooi to apologise for the ‘kucing kurap’ (literally mangy cat) remarks.
Its chairman, Jahangir Abdul Shukkor said if Ooi did not do so, they would send mangy cats to his house.
