Umno to review ‘weaknesses’ in its polls process

PONTIAN: Umno will plug weaknesses during the recent party polls which were brought up by members at the grassroots level, said its information chief, Ahmad Maslan.
He said the weaknesses, including allegedly loose nomination conditions and election process, would be studied by the Umno Election Committee and the amendments would be made after the Umno General Assembly in December.
“Some members claimed that it is so easy to join the fray to the extent that anybody could vie for a position and even newly elected division chiefs could go for Supreme Council posts,” he told reporters after the Taman Benut Utama Housing Project groundbreaking ceremony here yesterday.

He said there were also complaints on inefficient vote-counting process resulting in some results could only be announced in the wee hour of the day.
“A method to resolve disputes in the event candidates receiving the same number of electoral college votes must be found as had happened in the tussle for the Umno Youth vice-chief post recently,” he said.
Ahmad said the withdrawal of candidature period for division and supreme council posts would also be studied to avoid unscrupulous members from taking advantage of the situation.
