Thousand cops to ensure peace in Penang

GEORGE TOWN, Dec 31 (Bernama) — The police are to deploy up to 1,000 personnel to ensure order at the venues in Penang where the people are likely to gather tonight to usher in the new year.

Penang CPO Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said three of the favourite spots were Gurney Drive, the Esplanade and Juru Auto City.
“In their excitement to usher in the new year, the people should not forget to abide by the law and maintain harmony,” he told reporters at the presentation of police excellence service awards, here, last night.

He also said that the police were ready for any eventuality, including the possibility of having to deal with the planned street protests allegedly aimed at toppling the government.
Meanwhile, Abdul Rahim said the crime index for Penang recorded a drop of 5.4 percent for the period January to Nov 29 this year compared to 2012.
Street crimes dropped by 1,255 cases or 54.2 percent and property crimes, by 550 cases or 7.8 percent, he said.
However, violent crimes registered an increase of 104 cases or 8.1 percent, he added.

At the event, 126 policemen, journalists, individuals and NGOs were presented with letters of appreciation from the Penang CPO for excellent service during the year.
