PETALING JAYA: PAS leaders who participated at the anti-price hike rally today defended themselves against a reprimand by Perak Mufti Harussani Zakaria, saying they were acting in accordance with the Quran.
PAS Central Working Committee member Dzulkefly Ahmad said the Quran contained many verses that encourage the voicing out of opinion.
He quoted examples from the holy book and suggested that Harussani deliver sermons based on them.
News reports today quoted Harussani as saying that participants in the weekend rally had committed treason and thereby gone against Islamic teachings.
According to the Umno-linked Berita Harian, he said Islam forbade such a rally and would sanction the killing of its participants.
Harussani trained his guns on the PAS leaders who participated, saying they did not understand the Quran properly.
Dzulkefly said the mufti was being selective in his interpretation of Islamic rulings to favour Barisan Nasional.
He accused Harussani of being “deafeningly silent” in the face of abuse of the nation’s wealth by the politically powerful.
He noted that the Auditor General’s annual reports provided many examples of mismanagement and waste of public funds, which he said were clearly against Islamic teachings.
He also criticised Harussani for his failure to play the role of peacemaker between opposing parties.
“He should also be reprimanding statements made by Jalur Tiga (Jati) and Perkasa, who like to stoke fire between opposing parties,” he said.
PAS vice-president Salahuddin Ayub said PAS had a strong message to deliver during the rally.
“It’s clear that what we did is according to the Quran and was an important part of PAS’ struggle,” he said.
“We do not need advise from Harussani.”
