PPS members and social activist charged

PPSz26
GEORGE TOWN: Two members of the  Voluntary Patrol Unit (PPS) and a social activist were charged at the Magistrate’s Court today for taking part in a street brawl last month.

PPS members Lee Yew Kuen, 66, and Lee Chan Kwong, 36, and social activist Ong Eu Soon, 51, pleaded not guilty and claimed trial after DPP Razali Che Ani read the charge before Magistrate L.Umma Devi.

They were charged under Section 160 of the Penal Code with committing an affray and fighting in a public place.
They were alleged to have committed the offence at the Bandar Baru Air Itam wet market at 10.45pm on August 17.
The charge carries a RM1,000 fine or six months jail, or both upon conviction.
Both PPS members were represented by R S N Rayer, who is also the DAP assemblyman for Seri Delima, while Ong was unrepresented.
They were granted RM1,200 court bail each with one surety.
During a press conference on August 18, Ong alleged that he was assaulted by a group of helmet wielding attackers, including PPS members, while he was taking his meal in the wet market.
The attack on Ong triggered the police crackdown on the unregistered PPS in the following days forcing the unlawful uniformed outfit to cease operations.
